Growth is an ever evolving process, where pieces of us change, while others stay the same. Growth is dependent on our ability to think about your experiences and get in touch with what it really feels like to be us. Our insight into ourselves is not about what we do and how we feel what we do impacts others, rather, it is our ability to sit with ourselves and our thoughts and get curious about understanding ourselves. When we can get curious about ourselves, we can ask ourselves: what about this moment makes me feel unsafe? how am I really feeling right now? what is the story I am telling myself right now? what am I trying to fix? what state is my nervous system in? Curiosity is the stepping stone to truly understanding ourselves.
Here is a short list of indicators that you are growing and getting in touch with your internal experience:
You can sit in stillness and be with your own thoughts
You can identify how you are feeling
You know you are not your thoughts and feelings
When other people get upset, you can see their pain, understand their hurting and not take it on as your own
You can set boundaries with kindness
You know and understand that you cannot fix or change other people
You can let yourself experience joy
